Anyway, last week was IT. I will try to jot down quick notes of things that were discussed. Perhaps not DETAILS but at least the apps/ideas so that I won't let them go off into never never land on my iPad.
First of all I didn't make it to the opening session. STUPID MIGRAINES!!! You KNOW it's bad when I'm not there EARLY on the first day. The first session I actually made it to was my friend Kimberly Ramsey -Oak Hill Elementary and other media specialists from Newton County (Lori McGovern - Indian Creek Middle School, Leslie Coleman - Veterans Memorial Middle School, and one more - I'll have to find her name) . The title of the session was
Become a System-Wide Media Specialist Dream Team.
It was so inspirational! Their county lost their media coordinator in 2009. and they were taken in by the technology director of their county. Instead of having one elementary meeting and one middle/high meeting each month, they now have one meeting all together once a month. They formed a LEADERSHIP TEAM. This leadership team meets before the big meeting to plan the meeting each month. One month it was all about media, next month all about technology.
They started a mentoring program similar to the new teacher mentor program. New media specialist are allowed to visit other media specialists, shadow, model like new teacher program.
In 2011 they made sure they were part of the planning teams in their schools, part of the data digs, etc. We need to make our value known to other stakeholders.
They participated in the Library Media Specialist of the Year (State Wide)
They promoted themselves by getting their picture in the paper, on websites, write articles.
They started including trainings during meetings. They do book studies.
Everyone has a Twitter account and uses it to market their program.
They have a blog written by all 23 media specialists. This will include things like AR parties, how to use centers in the library, etc.
They all participate in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl. The superintendent touts it as much as football!
They work on collaboration. They have a lisserv, Pinterest boards, they have a shared responsibility of coming up with content based resources.
It was a 3-5 year process for them to get to this point. They meet during the school day. Leadership Team meets at 1:30 at a downtown coffee house. The superintendent drop by and technology director will come to all meetings.
Their monthly trainings also start at 1:30 but these are at central office.
Next up AR - Augmented Reality - Some fun stuff! First though - a nap!! Good night!
Session 2: The New AR: Using Augmented Reality Books and Apps - Jennifer Lewis Cherokee County - Indian Knoll Elementary and Anne Nechvatal - Cherokee County Ball Ground Elementary
This was an exciting class! I've used AR before but with so so results (mostly because of our non-working wireless network).
From their slides:
What is Augmented Reality?
AR is a technology that uses a webcam and a trigger image embedded in a book or card to create interactive 3-D models on a computer.
Why Use AR?
*21st Century media centers should have a wide variety of media formats: books, magazine, audio books, e-books, databases, and multimedia books.
* AR infuses technology into the curriculum
* AR is high interest for students
Why Use AR in Education?
AR is a revolutionary concept that makes virtual, 3D objects appear in the real world, attached to real objects. Users look through a Viewing Device or at a monitor to see virtual objects like planets, volcanoes, the human heart or dinosaurs. These can be attached to cards, the pages of a book, interactive white boards, or even on the floor or wall to provide a 3D animated replica that fills the room.
Virtual objects excel at conveying spatial, temporal and contextual concepts- especially when the real objects (or real replicas) are too expensive, dangerous, or fragile. They can also be highly interactive, letting users erupt a volcano, build a human heart or pull planters out of the solar system for closer inspection. - Jeff Dunn @edudemic
You can find AR on:
- Kermit the Frog Band-Aids
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Band-Aids
- Del Taco table literature
- Lucky Charms cereal box
- Lego Fusion
When you purchase books/materials, make sure they work with the apps/devices that are available to your students.
Applications in the Classroom and Media Center
- Introduce a new unit
- Engaging interactive multimedia lessons
- Small group work\
- Incentives
- Check out
- Book reviews
- Scavenger hunts
Helpful Hints:
- download webcam and software before use
- test EVERYTHING in advance
- purchase several copies of the same book
- only one webcam can be used at one time.
DK has books and posters. Some animate and read book to you.

Create your own content using Aurasma
Follow Two Guys and Some iPads blog http://www.twoguysandsomeipads.com/
They have a lot of information about AR
Examples I saw were:
- 360° view of Mount Everest
- The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore- download the app IMAG-N-O-TRON for .99 and see the book come to life. I love seeing the books fly around the room/media center/ wherever you are!
- Dinosaur - chase kid on front row.
- use trigger cards
- Ice age - puts your face in character
- Aurasma
- follow channel then you can see video
- MAKE SURE LOCATION SERVICES IS ON!!!!
Lemons and Lemonade - Capstone book - scanned pages of book - Used Tellagami
Open Aurasma on iPad
scan pages of ebook
ask question
Idea: Scan covers of Ga Book Aware Nominee - linked to book trailers from YouTube
Idea: Use BTSB posters - hang around media center - have pictures trigger a trailer, book review, Tellagami, etc. of book
Use Aurasma Studio on computer - 2 minute video explains how it works. Set up your own triggers for anything you'd like!
ColAR Mix - color sheets sheets come alive! Older kids have already colored some sheets, written stories and gone MAD for the AR associated with their pictures! There are also some plant and animals cells. I had a dinosaur walk on my hand! I think that got the attention of some of the younger children!
Other Examples:
- Fetch
- Shake Press
- Space Craft 3D
- AR Flash Card
Session 3: Using StoryStarter to Engage and Motivate Writers - Merry Willis Cherokee County Schools
These looked like great tools to use in the classroom. My schedule is insane so I don't see this being something I could use regularly in the media center unless it's in a center. I would have LOVED these in my 2nd grade classroom.
The idea is you get a kit to build scenes with Legos. Once they build a scene, they write about it.
The kits are designed to be used with a group of 5 kids. It has a lot of elements not in a regular Lego kit. IE chains, crowbar, brick separator
There is a story visualizer app for iPad or Android.
Cost: (Great use of Title I funds)
- Core set - $115.00
- Curriculum and Software pack - $124.00
- Classroom Packs - Best Value

Grants - justification is on the Lego website. Lego has a grant as well.
Session 4: Hide Your Wallet: It's Gadget Time - Leslie Fisher, Fisher Technologies
I LOVE all of the sessions with Leslie Fisher! You can find the handout for this session at http://www.lesliefisher.com/handouts/gadgets_fisher.pdf
I'll mention a few of the standouts for me...
I have a TON of cables I carry everywhere. Cacoon Grid It helps you organize cables. What a nerd!
Photomath app - DO NOT SHARE WITH KIDS but WOW!
I've used Plickers with classes as well as Kahoot. I love both of them. Again when using Kahoot - I pray that the wireless network is working... for the ENTIRE lesson! :-)
