GaETC 2014 Day 2 November 6

Day 2 November 6 started off a little better. Just soooooo MUUUUUCCCCHHH Traffic!!! This year was a record breaking crowd at the conference and they all decided to get there at around 7:30! OUCH! What a backup!

Session 1: Tammy's Favorite Technology Tips - Tammy W
I always enjoy her sessions and this is her return to the conference after a one or two year absence. I got my idea of posting my Google calendar on my webpage from her. I just update the sections I need to and keep a spreadsheet of what we do in the media center. I only share the current week. http://merdeen.com/LessonPlans.html

I was the VERY back of the huge auditorium and was just there for the last few minutes. When I came in she was showing people how to create their own YouTube channel. Since I already have one I took that time to try to organize for the day. Mary Amoson (from Moreland) was sitting next to me and told me about Blendspace http://www.blendspace.com Blendspace allows teachers to organizeby collecting web resources in one place and share with just one link, assess by measuring student understanding with built-in quizzes, and track and monitor student progress and adapt to student needs in real-time. Teachers are using Blendspace for flipping their classroom, project based learning, and differentiated instruction.

Back to Tammy's Tips. This one ALMOST makes me want to go back to school for my doctorate... ALMOST! I have started using Google Drive more. I haven't quite given up DropBox but I am using GD more.
Open up a new Google Doc. If you click on Tools and pull down to Research, there is a great little nugget just waiting for you! When you click on Research, a box will pop on the right side. It's amazing. You can search for a topic. Choose if you want to search everything, images, scholar, quotes, dictionary, personal, or tables. Once you search for your topic, you can preview or look at the article. You could take notes on the article or write about it but the best thing is that you can click on a link and it will automatically put in your citation. You can choose from MLA, APA, or Chicago. As you click on the options you can see that you get a lot of choices. For instance on the images, you can filter image results by usage rights, I think this would be very handy for anyone in high school, college, or graduate school.

Another app suggested by my friend Mary Amoson is Decide Now. It's another great way to select students - just grab your phone and spin the wheel!

Copy Paste Character copypastecharacter.com lets you copy and paste odd characters that you CAN make with your keyboard but you usually can't remember the shortcuts.  for example. You just click on the icon and it goes to your clipboard - you don't have to right click and copy. Then just paste it where you want it! I forgot about this and had to write 360° but I looked up how to type ° instead of going to this site. YES! I HAVE A BAD MEMORY!!!

Hundreds of worksheets - hundredsofworksheets.com
Create your own worksheets  - also has venn diagrams, etc.

Worksheet Workshttp://www.worksheetworks.com/ - You can sign up for a free account and make a variety of worksheets. You can create handwriting paper, word searches, puzzles, math, language arts, personal organization etc. Hundreds of worksheets, millions of combinations. Our kids are crazy about word searches. I can whip one out in less than 5 minutes - IF the network is working... Have I mentioned we have network problems that DRIVE ME INSANE?!
